A Stick in a Dark Room
A deconstructed essay film and live reading. Beginning with Niels Bohr's 1929 thought experiment 'a stick in a dark room', this piece diffractively explores dissonances between two artworks - a dustbowl ballad by Woody Guthrie and a short story by Virginia Woolf. Both works revolve around characters who sleep in orchards but in very different economic, social and environmental circumstances. The piece explores rural labour, story telling and the potential of artworks to reveal and conceal worlds. Taking place in a darkened room, the space is animated by sound, torch light and projector, with the beam attaining the impression of solidity through the intermittent sprinkling of dust on the light's path. Subtitles combine with recorded voice over and live reading. The piece was performed at 'What If We All Knew' at LARGE AVU, Prague.
