'Meagre Yellow Light' explores the textuality and sculptural potential of the written word. It examines the use of light as a symbolic and narrative device throughout John Steinbeck’s novella, ‘Of Mice and Men’. Excerpts are appropriated that describe light permeating the boundaries of the bleak wooden bunkhouse and barn, giving an impression of solidity through colliding with ambient dust and hovering particles of debris. These words are physically laser cut into plywood, producing negative spaces that allow ambient light to pour through. The material and form of the text reflects its semantic content and language dissolves into both the conditions it describes and the physical location in which it is situated.
